In the south (Greek Cypriot) part of Cyprus there is delightfully clear sea and abundant marine life to be found near Ayia Napa and Protaras. Both resorts are accessed from Larnaca airport, and the livelier Ayia Napa boasts Nissi Beach. Protaras trumps this with Fig Tree Bay, and along the coast towards the interesting town of Paralimni there are several good snorkelling bays.

Of the many attractive parts of Crete, the coast from Agios Nikolaos to Elounda and the island of Spinalonga offer an excellent underwater experience. Surprisingly, the busy port at Ag. Nik. has clear water and is teeming with life, seemingly oblivious to the cruise liners and ferries that visit regularly. Nearby beaches have sand for those who are not just interested in the sea, and for once the locals appear not to have eaten all the octopus!
