The Maldives

Home Up

The Maldives are a scattered group of about a thousand islands in the Indian Ocean. Only approximately 100 of them are inhabited, and tourism is the main industry. Virtually all the tourist islands are a paradise for divers and snorkellers, with a prolific and varied fish life. Whereas much of the coral was bleached by El Nino, it is visibly recovering and hasn't noticeably affected fish stocks.

We have visited Summer Island and Vilamendhoo, and enjoyed both immensely. For snorkelling Vilamendhoo is our first choice as the reef virtually encircles the island, and both fish and corals are very plentiful and varied.

Some believe that global warming will eventually lead to the Maldives disappearing underwater, as they are very flat. You may feel that you must take the opportunity to enjoy their delights while you can.
